Types of Cards

**Coming Soon!** Student Card - A special type of card exclusively for Mendon/Unity School District students. These are created for all PK-5th grade students and housed at the Four Star Public Library specifcally for classroom visits to the library. A student may check out materials outside of these visits on their personal, Juvenile card. Materials checked out on the Juvenile card will be the responsibility of the child's parent or legal guardian and all collection rules apply. Materials checked out to the Student Card will not accrue fees or fines.

Teacher Card - Another special type of card exclusively for Mendon/Unity School District teachers and/or aides. If a Mendon/Unity teacher or aide woud like to check out school related material from the Four Star Public Library, they can request a Teacher Card. The Teacher Card will be active from Aug. 1 - May 31 each school year and can only be used for school-related materials. If a teacher would like to check out a best-seller, they must use his/her personal, Adult Card. The Teacher Card can be kept at the Four Star Public Library.

Non-Resident Card - Individuals residing beyond the jurisdictional boundaries of the Four Star Public Library District and not within the boundaries of another public library, and owning no property within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Four Star Public Library District, may purchase an annual non-resident fee card.  A non-resident shall apply for a non-resident library card at the closest public library.  The factor for determining the closest public library shall be determined by the residence of the non-resident.  A non-resident card holder does not receive the same reciprocal borrowing privileges as a resident card holder.  Our current non-resident card holder fee is $94.00 for a household and $40 for an individual.

Juvenile Card - For residents of the Four Star Public Library District who are 5-17 years of age and wish to access items, physical or digital, from the library. They will need to present to the Four Star Public Library in person, with a parent or legal guardian. That adult will need to show a photo ID and proof of address in the library district. Materials checked out on the Juvenile card will be the responsibility of the child's parent or legal guardian and all collection rules apply.

Adult Card - For residents of the Four Star Public Library District who are OVER 18 years of age and wish to access items, physical or digital, from the library. They will need to present to the Four Star Public Library in person and show a photo ID and proof of address in the library district. Proof of address can be a bill, piece of mail, lease agreement, driver's license or state ID, or checkbook. Materials checked out on the Adult card will be the responsibility of adult requesting a card and all collection rules apply.

Four Star Public Library cards expire 3 years from creation. It is easy to renew. Just let us know if your card is about to expire. Visit us or give us a call if you have a question.

If you are under 18, you will need to bring a parent or legal guardian to renew. You do not need to show a photo ID or proof of address, but your parent or legal guardian might.

Need a new card?

Visit the Four Star Public Library in person, present your picture ID and proof of address. The fee to replace a library card is $1.00.

Reciprocal Borrowing

As a resident cardholder of a Four Star Public Library card, you may physically take your library card to another Illinois library to borrow materials. These materials are the responsibility of the individual who borrows them, and are subject to all the fines, rules, and regulations of the lending library.  Often, libraries limit the borrowing privileges of reciprocal borrowers, and it is best to establish local rules and procedures before making your selections.

Individuals presenting a valid card from another public library in Illinois may borrow materials from the Four Star Public Library District.  The card must have the name of the individual presenting it and an expiration date in the future to be valid for reciprocal borrowing.

Did you know? Four Star Public Library is FINE FREE!

Because overdue fines are widely recognized as ineffective in teaching responsibility or motivating borrowers to return items on time, the Four Star Public Library does not charge them. Assessing fees makes our community members less likely to return to the library and less likely to utilize its resources.

Instead, when an item on a patron's account is 28 days overdue, the patron will be billed for those items and, if unpaid, the patron's card will be blocked from further checkout until the item is returned or fee is paid.
